Genesis is Our Origin Story
Genesis is our origin story.
That was the point of my sermon this past Sunday. It orients us and directs us. It reveals the source and the purpose of our blessings- our relationship with God.
This Sunday we will look at the ‘first’ creation story- from chapter 1 of Genesis. “In the beginning, God…”
There are many questions that this text does not want to answer. Like, how was light (day 1) created before the sun (day 4)? Rather, our task is to discover the questions that the text does want to answer- and frankly, those are the more interesting ones! Questions like:
· What is the purpose of creation?
· Why is the story of creation structured in days- evenings and mornings?
· What is the relationship of God with creation?
· What does it mean that humans are made in the ‘image’ of God?
· What does it mean that God ‘rested’ after creating?
Where we begin determines where we end up! The first chapter of Genesis shows us that God brings order out of chaos, meaning out of mess. And God declares it all good.
