Loving Our Neighbors

Northside Drive Baptist Church will launch a new ESL (English as a Second Language) program. This new ministry, offered in partnership with The Re-Church Project, a nonprofit organization, reflects who we are called to be as a church: a pillar in our community, committed to loving our neighbors and honoring the dignity of every person God places in our midst.
In a season marked by cultural division and a difficult political climate surrounding immigration, this ESL program is a tangible expression of our faith. Rather than responding with fear, distance, or debate, we choose compassion, presence, and relationship. Scripture calls us to this
work: “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself” (Leviticus 19:34).
For many immigrants and newcomers, language is one of the greatest barriers to dignity. It affects the ability to advocate for oneself at work, communicate at school, access services, and feel a sense of belonging in everyday life. This program seeks to meet that need by offering practical English instruction in a welcoming, respectful, and Christ-centered environment. Classes will focus on everyday English skills that help participants gain confidence, independence, and voice.
At Northside Drive Baptist Church, we believe loving our neighbor is not just a belief—it is a practice. Jesus’ teaching in Luke 10 reminds us to draw near, listen, and walk alongside one another. This ESL ministry is one way we live out that calling, choosing relationship over rhetoric
and dignity over indifference.
Volunteers are essential to the success of this ministry. We are seeking members of our church family to serve as classroom helpers, conversation partners, and behind-the-scenes support. No previous ESL experience is required—only a willingness to show up consistently, treat others
with respect, and care about the people in front of you. Catherine Campbell serves as the liaison for the ESL program and will be available to answer questions and help guide volunteers. A volunteer sign-up sheet is available in the Art and Soul hallway beside the Bell Room, and we encourage anyone interested to stop by and add their name.
As we begin this new outreach, we invite our church family to pray, support, and participate. Whether you are able to serve weekly or occasionally, your involvement matters. Together, we trust God will use this program not only to teach English, but to build relationships, affirm dignity,
and strengthen our witness in the community.
In a time when many feel unseen or unheard, Northside Drive Baptist Church remains committed to being a place of refuge, hope, and dignity—faithfully walking alongside our immigrant neighbors.
