Putting the Pieces Together: A Vision for the ‘Church of Tomorrow’

Posted by Scott Hovey on April 03, 2025

This past Sunday, as a part of my sermon, I shared a vision for the future of Northside Drive. This vision arose from many conversations over the past several years. This vision doesn’t strike me as all that novel. It ‘feels’ like Northside Drive to me. My hope is that it will give us a direction and a focus. I believe it will give us hope.

As our former pastor, Forrest Lanier, liked to say, we are the ‘church of tomorrow.’ Here are six principles for us today as the church of tomorrow:

  • Define our Identity: The Strength of our Theology

o Northside Drive has been known for many things over the years. At this point in our history, it is our theology that stands out. It is what makes us unique. Our theology is what enables us to be inclusive, inquiring and involved.

  • Focus our Energy: A ‘Deep-End’ Church

o Many churches wear themselves out meeting everyone’s needs. We would instead like to ‘do a few things and do them well.’ We will leave some ministries to other churches and focus on what we do best- challenge the mind and heart, help rebuild fragile faith and model a deep and rich life of faith for those around us.

  • Stabilize our Finances: Maximize Alternative Revenue

o Kiddos has been a great partnership for us. We will continue to look for ways to be a hub of community activity in ways that contribute to our financial obligations.

  • Share the Vision: Marketing, Speakers, Events

o We’ve got a great story to share. We will build on our new brand and logo to share our story and invite others to come and see!

  • Increase Justice Profile: Showcase our Passions

o We will lean into the causes and concerns that are important to us. We will speak, share, stand, march, give and pray on behalf of God’s great work in this world.

  • Be Ourselves: Thrive!

o We will experience the joy of engaging in holy work together!

As I shared on Sunday, this vision is the beginning of a conversation. My office is always open, my phone always near. Share with me your thoughts, your hopes and your vision for our lives together.
