South Africa Trip

Posted by Scott Hovey on February 01, 2024

We are going to South Africa! Heather and I are very excited for our trip next week. Here are some details and how you can travel with us.

Our trip leaders are Stephen Cook and Daniel Johnson, the senior pastor and associate pastor at Second Baptist Church of Memphis. They have been leading multi-church trips to South Africa for many years. Daniel also serves with Heather on the board of Together for Hope, Arkansas. The purpose of this trip is to bring a group of pastors to see first-hand the ministries these churches have been serving.

Heather and I look forward to sharing along the way and also when we return. We are working with Amelia to get reports back to Northside Drive along the way. We are excited to bring back new ministry possibilities that will connect our church to the world in new and different ways.

We leave on Friday, February 2 on a non-stop flight to Johannesburg. The 16-hour flight will land on Saturday evening local time. We will be staying at City Lodge- a hotel near the airport.

On Sunday morning we will worship at Good Shepherd Healing Ministries. I (Scott) will be preaching during worship (something I’ve done on just about every Mission Trip I’ve been on!). Sunday afternoon we will visit the Refilwe Bophelo Clinic and LIV Lanseria.

On Monday we will visit a local ministry called Door of Hope. Each year in South Africa thousands of babies are abandoned. Door of Hope is a ministry dedicated to saving and caring for abandoned babies.

Monday afternoon we will travel about 4 hours south of Johannesburg to Winterton where we will stay for the rest of the week. During our time in Winterton we will visit local ministries: the Gabriel Foundation, and Inspired Hope.

On Wednesday, we will participate in a Pastor’s Conference and encourage local Christian pastors.

On Thursday, we will visit the rural Thembalethu Care Organization that serves people with HIV/ AIDS. Later in the day we will hike in the Drakensburg mountains near the border with Lesotho.

On Friday, we will drive back to Johannesburg and prepare to fly out in the evening. Heather and I will travel through London on our way back where we will have a day to see the sights and drink an ale!

Pray for us and we’ll be in prayer for you!

Scott and Heather
