The Love of God for All Persons
Just over eight years ago, during a called Church-in-Conference session, Northside Drive Baptist Church voted to adopt a statement of policy concerning inclusivity. The policy read, “Northside Drive Baptist Church, believing in the love of God for all persons, will provide equal access to all facets of life and ministry of our church (including membership, baptism, ordination, marriage, teaching, staffing and leadership) without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity.”
This new policy statement made explicit what had long been implicit. We became on paper what we were in practice- a fully inclusive church.
It is remarkable when Baptists can agree on anything! But it is even more remarkable when a church stands with courage against the prevailing tides of cultural Christianity in order to affirm biblically-informed and Spirit-led convictions. Northside Drive chose (and continues to choose) to side with God’s love.
The month of June has been designated for the recognition of LGBTQ+ Pride. While our country has grown significantly in acceptance of difference, there is still a long way to go. But Northside Drive stands “Proudly” as a church who welcomes and affirms all people.
Atlanta holds off its Pride Parade until the weather is more agreeable- Atlanta Pride will be held on Sunday, October 13. As we did last year, Northside Drive will participate in the parade. This is one way that we can share our convictions with the community.
Just as our inclusivity statement made explicit what was long implicit- so we share outside our walls who we are and what we believe. We believe in the “Love of God for all persons.” Amen!
