This Cultural Moment

Like you, I was shocked when I heard about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. I was very familiar with Charlie and his message (many thanks to social media!). I knew that he often visited college campuses to debate students. Having served as a college campus minister for 7 years, I understand the college context well, and I have respect for anyone who challenges college students to put the pieces together and think deeply about the world. Charlie Kirk’s death was indeed a shock to many people. Violence that is elevated to the level of assassination is disturbing and should be disturbing to all people of good will.
When I say that I was familiar with Charlie Kirk, it is because I disagreed with him on many topics. I felt no animosity towards him- we just came to different conclusions.
His death has seemingly created a cultural moment. His memorial service last Sunday made that very clear. I can’t remember a time when Christian faith played such a prominent role in our national discourse. There surely seems to be a spike in faith among young people- and much of that, to be sure, is because of Charlie Kirk.
While I am glad anytime someone begins to explore the Christian faith, I am concerned when many of the conclusions reached, positions taken, and arguments made differ so greatly from what I read in the Bible.
