Who is Jesus Christ for Us Today?

On April 30, 1944 (81 years ago today), Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German Lutheran Pastor, wrote a letter from his prison cell to his friend Eberhard Bethge. He was imprisoned for resisting the authorities in Nazi Germany. In this letter, he wrestled with how the Christian church engaged with the world. He wrote, “What is bothering me incessantly is the question what Christianity really is, or indeed who Christ really is, for us today.”
Who is Jesus Christ for us today? That question has been asked and re-asked many times in the past 81 years. The question draws together faith rooted in history and the challenges of the present. It is a question that must be asked again and again with each passing day.
Northside Drive has asked a similar question, “We believe God calls us into Christian community with the challenge to discern and act upon the ongoing revelation of God in our time and place.”
We will spend the weeks of Eastertide asking this question: considering who Jesus Christ is for us today. This will hold together our experience of the resurrection and the deep cries of our world today.
This Sunday, my sermon will ask Bonhoeffer’s question, and we will begin to put the pieces together as we discern who Jesus Christ is for us today.
Thank you to the Rev. Dr. Priscilla Eppinger for preaching in my absence last week. I’m grateful to all who led the service. During the service we commissioned Becky Pinney to her next adventure and we wrapped up Mack Beverly’s tenure with us on organ.
We are excited to welcome Melinda Clark back to the organ bench this Sunday after her lengthy medical absence.
